IN ATTO [In Place], a performance by Anna Maria Maiolino, 2015

In Atto is rendered by two women: the young performer, Sandra Lessa, and the elder, Anna Maria Maiolino. The artist’s participation in this work exudes metaphoric and symbolic aspects, as a support for bringing the youngster back to life.

The work shows life-affirming aspects of rituals related to pain, repression and death. Sandra, the young performer, composes a language of voiced sounds associated to the dramatization of her body. The soundscape works with a language of its own, with an extra-grammatical sense, and without losing the feeling of the dimensions of the creative act in the making. The corporal dramatization in IN ATTO, compared to a shamanic rite with its shouts and movements, stirs the self-restoration of life over death. The body, initially inert and wrapped in bandages, as the performance unfolds feeds on itself, is regenerated and returns to life.

Título: É O QUE É

Edição: Anna Maria Maiolino e Mateus Pires

Title: IT IS WHAT IT IS

Editing: Anna Maria Maiolino and Mateus Pires

Photography with cell phone camera: Anna Maria Maiolino

Voice: Tania Piffer

Length: 8 ’36”

Synopsis: “IT IS WHAT IT IS”, is the title of the last video produced by Anna Maria Maiolino. She defines this work as “a-documentary” or “between-documents” and is part of a small series of videos in which the artist associates with the real as a poetic motivator of the work.

The free way in which the camera was used to capture images shows that in this footage there is no interest in giving supremacy to the sight. The video runs between the presence of death and its mysteries with the free movements of the camera and the sounds in the dark space of the “Cimitero delle Fontanelle”. The sounds produced by Tania Piffer's voice accentuate the spell of space, and the video, despite the non-linearity narrative acquires meanings between the ironic and the tragic.

The recording was made during Maiolino’s visit to the “Cimitero delle Fontanelle” in Naples, Italy, which occupies underground spaces in the city. The peculiarity of this cemetery is not only in what you see, but in all the stories, anecdotes and curiosities behind its history as an ancient ossuary that stretches over 3000 square meters. The cemetery preserved four centuries of remains of those who could not afford a funeral, victims of the epidemics that often hit Naples. Bones and skulls huddled together are visible to the visitor.

The connection and feelings together with the imaginary of life after death is part of the daily life of Neapolitans and is integral to the culture of the city.

Tornei-me Calabra-Tupi-Guarani.

Assim continuo, me deliciando com a poesia dos outros e sempre com novos banquetes que minha vida peregrina me proporciona.

ANTHROPOPHAGIC BANQUET: Project for a Conference

I am the faecal ball resulting from the Brazilian anthropophagic banquet: my work and I are like the Tupi people. ‘What collided with the truth was clothing, that impermeable layer between the inner and the outer worlds.’1 They took them off at the banquet, I was left naked.

‘In the country of the great snake’2 I finally managed not to use any grammar. Mixed in my digestive system were the cultures of my native land – Calabria, in the south of Italy – and of the Tupi-Guarani land. I became Calabrian-Tupi-Guarani. I got rid of logic, of the obligation to be coherent, of catechism. I gained freedom.

‘The spirit refuses to conceive the spirit without the body.’3 In the faecal mortar, all ‘my taboos and totems were transformed’.4 I came back to life ‘from the equation I coming from the Cosmos to the axiom Cosmos coming from the I’.5 And finally I breathe in what is Right as ‘a guarantee of the full exercise of possibilities’.6 I did not arrive at the ‘Country of Carnival’7 like the Conquistadors, but in a train full of immigrants. As I disembarked in Rio de Janeiro, I was devoured by the beauty of a blazing landscape: water, blue sky, sun and mountains. I happily gave myself away to the open mouth of the Guanabara Bay. I was eaten ‘like a sacred enemy’,8 digested and expelled by myself, an anthropophagous.

In my new condition as an anthropophagous, I went in search of food. The first person I tasted was Oswald de Andrade and, by identification, his Anthropophagous Manifesto. Then it was the turn of the Neo-Concretist artists. I digested very slowly their conceptual ideas, such as: not to conceive ‘…a work of art like a “machine” or an “object”, but rather like a “near body”, i.e., a being whose reality transcends the external relations of its elements; a being that, while capable of being deconstructed through analysis, can only be fully realised through direct, phenomenological means…’9 The banquet was copious during the sixties. I tasted Lygia Clark’s immanence and subjectivity, while Hélio Oiticica was proposing new problems for Brazilian consumption.

While chewing the cud, I signed the Declaração de Princípios Básicos da Nova Vanguardia (Declaration of Basic Principles of the New Avant-Garde) in 1967 – me, who could hardly speak Portuguese – and timidly took part in the exhibition Nova Objetividade Brasileira (New Brazilian Objectivity) at the Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro. Those were hard times. The military were in power. And yet our manifesto rejected all that was institutional and imposed: ‘…the avant-garde assumes a clearly revolutionary position and extends its manifestation to all the fields of man’s sensitivity and conscience… its project is based on the freedom of human beings, and its execution seeks to transcend the paralysing conditions of this freedom…’10

And so I continue to enjoy other people’s poetry, always finding new banquets in my pilgrim’s life.

Photopoemation

The series Fotopoemação (Photopoemation), initiated in 1973, is a transversal and parallel production based on images derived from my poems. It is also the result of selected images taken directly from Super 8 films, from videos and performances, some of which were made in cooperation with photographer friends. The latest photos were taken by myself with a digital camera. The works of this series, as well as representing challenges of poetic labor, are also efficient instruments for innovation and freedom. They are an elaboration of our discerning the surroundings: a way of thinking about worldly matters while attempting to transform what we experience into awareness, into an operational poetic motion of the behaviour.
