Minhas MÃOS incorporam a função do PRIMEIRO MOLDE.

Sculpture/Installations and Clay Installations 1994-2020

The works done in 1990, the sculptures/installations and the clay installations, are open-ended works: they are works in process.  They are elaborated through repetition of the action of the gesture, a gesture which, being nature, does not repeat itself.  In the like, there is the different. These likenesses/differences (forms) accumulate in the body of the work.

In the clay installations, as in the sculptures/installations, neither the symbolic nor the allegorical is utilized. “... the intent of being in real, rather than illusory, space...,” ¹ for this is about LABOR and products of the hand’s first actions in the ordering of the clay: basic forms, an accumulation of entropy.  Analogously, the viewer will be able to find here “pasta,” residuals, or other elements; however, this is not the aim, all of the portions of moist “dough” present similarities, which could be misleading to the less perceptive viewer.  “The allegorical vision does not aim for any totality, but establishes itself out of fragments and ruins,” ² while the labor here, performed by “THE DOING HAND,” attempts to bring the work to a TOTALITY OF FRAGMENTS. Lying herein is an IMMANENT YEARNING for TOTALITY, reenforced by the obsessive reuniting of parts and expanding of the process in time.

Clay, incorporating the traditional system of ceramists of all times into my work called Rolinhos or Cobrinhas (Little Rolls or Little Serpentines), making it part of my discourse. This consisted of kneading, cutting, rolling and through the permanence in time for the elaboration of the work, appropriation of the LABOR by the POETIC comes about - and it could be said that here there is a wish, more than a possibility, for approaching the symbolic. The labor becomes the fundamental element of the work.  The poetic act rests on the foundation, the experience of our common past. It is that concept of EXPERIENCE, so greatly emphasized by Walter Benjamin.

On the other hand, the basic forms that compose the body of the work are forms complete in themselves. "The first impression [of the work] might produce in us the deceptive image of being close up to minimalist sensitivity. Indeed, repetition is one of the structural procedures of this work and of minimalist art.  Both have the intent of being in real, rather than illusory, space.  Certainly, these objects do not possess the industrial and pre-urban scale that characterizes minimalism. On the contrary, they seem to belong to a traditional pre-urban community space, where manual work is dominant, and the machine is absent....  The pursuit for pre-industrial and pre-modern life experiences harbors no intent to utopically disqualify contemporary life, but, rather, to show its unilaterality. It is in this that lies the contemporaneity of these clay objects, apparently so archaic.  The experience and thought incorporated in them do not belong to a specific, localized culture; they express common, everyday universal values....” ³.

It is precisely the emphasis on the EXPERIENCE OF THE MEMORY that approximates my work, particularly that of the 90s, to arte povera even more than to minimalist art, I think.  For the povera gives new value to the aspects of man’s work in his culture, linked to work in the fields and to manual work. Added to this are other common concerns, such as conceptual art; performance art; the utilization of worthless materials.

To me, trying to revive PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE means TRYING TO RESIST and abandoning RESIGNATION to the acceptance of post-modernism and its pulverizing effect. It is “immersing myself in the creativity of desire,”4 fortifying myself in the immanent BEING that, in the words of Spinoza, “expresses the creativity and joy - which cannot be suppressed – of existence.”

Memory and desire dwell as neighbors in the BEING’S most vital space, and it is by giving full expansion to the forces that emanate from this Being that the work of art can make its way through the bombardment of the various post–modern states of malaise and in spite of these, propose the construction of “something Other.”5  Trusting in that which is greatest in man, I have taken refuge in Spinoza’s feeling, which “allows us to live ‘this’ world of the ‘end of ideologies’ and the ‘end of history’ as a world to be reconstructed.”6  Meanwhile, I remain [immersed] in the work, laboring and returning to it. I extend the time of its duration in search of answers.  In this labor, my essence is restored.  My human existence is revitalized.

If, on the one hand, the labor is initiated from what IS already KNOWN, there also prevails the relation with the time present in the instant, which personifies the gesture at rest – the form, the outcome of the obsessive ADDING OF INSTANTS, in which the experience of doing is potentialized in the interrelation of natures: mine and that of the substance elaborated.

For some time now, my work has addressed a conscious interaction of material acts to incorporate the EXPERIENCE OF THE PHENOMENON.

In 1991, guided by intuition in this intention, I added to my vocabulary the first actions in the ordering of the compressing, summing, or successively adding small portions of clay with my fingers to form a body.  This archaic system is still applied today in the preparation and elaboration of clay products and has never been surpassed. One could say that it is the best - if not the only - way to do it.

At this point, the action of DOING acquires a new meaning to me. The production becomes my FORM OF EXISTING with what I am creating and is shared with the materials. My HANDS incorporate the new function of the FIRST MOULD.
